June june, what a crazy month :)

June is going to be a bit heavy. All weekends are taken:

  • 6th: Memobyte (Mantova): Event related on electronic and embedded systems, with a lot of companies involved in. I’ll be there to support Fedora FEL with some light speeches (during all the day) and a booth with gadgets, USB station. Thanks to Gianluca, Alexjan and Stefano who agreed to come with me.
  • 13th: ConfSL & LUGConf (Bologna): I’ll be in Bologna as two role: as President of LOLUG (no profit organization about Linux) and as Fedora Ambassador. This conference is really important to give a structure and exchange experiences in local user groups. Of course I’ll be there as Fedora ambassador because ConfSL has a lot of ubuntu/debian supporter, so I have to bring some fresh air :)
  • 19th-21th: Byte-code MeetUp (Bormio): The third annual Byte-Code MeetUp, a combination of sessions, talks, workshops, and hackfests in which contributors work on specific initiatives. This year will be some international VIPs :-)
  • 26th-28th: Fedora EMEA FUDCon (Berlin): Fedora user and developer conferences will include two days of hackfests and possibly some presentations, followed by a day of BarCamp.

Linux Day 2008 report

wow, Linux day 2008 has finished and I’m still alive.

Linux day 2008, this is the first time Fedora is sponsorized as much as possible to all around Italy, and maybe we got a new ambassador.

This year I lived Linux Day in a different way, I was present (not at the same time) in two city: my day started in Lodi with LOLUG and terminated in Mantova (a not-so-near-Lodi city) with LUGman.

In Lodi I spent most of the morning to finish the opened tasks: made LTSP working, deployed Fedora USB station and prepared myself for wireless (in)security talk I did with Stefano (to be honest, he did the presentation and I only help him with demo).

The fedora KIT worked well and I finally saw it after planning, organizing for months. We can tune and improve it, but we started and now is more simple to manage. ;-)

After midday I went in Mantova, and I realized how bad connected to Lodi is. ~150 Km. No Highways. The fastest path found suggested by GPS navigator was this: Lodi -> Piacenza -> Brescia -> Verona -> Mantova, completely pointless.
I decided to travel with my own route and I take more than 1,5 hours to go and about 2 hours to return (No way to reduce the travel time), fortunately my car is gas methane powered.

After arrived in Mantova I knew Pietro Calzoni and Fausto Picchi who were my fedora contacts in LUGMan. LUGMan’s Linux Day was organized in a quite different way, there wasn’t speech but only workshops. I had a table with a computer and the possibility to mix practice and theory.

My initial plan was to use the kick-ass-wonderful Lorenzo Villani’s Fedora presentation (we will provide the english version soon), but I preferred to spoke directly with interested people (a lot of people, 20-25 more or less), helped and showed them whatever they wanted.

I’d got a lot of questions: “What is the difference from Fedora and Ubuntu?”, “How is the Fedora community?”, “How I can have a polo like you?”, and so on.

I made 7/8 USB keys, I gave away all CDs. I spoke about many arguments: revisor, yum, packagekit, bodhi and koji, about the community (and the possibility to contribute without be a computer skilled person), the importance of being upstream (this was and always is the main point to explain why Fedora is better than Ubuntu).

I think our message “There is an awesome alternative to Ubuntu” was taken. We (fedora Italian Ambassador) are growing and we can reply to “$$ spent to burn CDs” with a lot of alternatives: Fedora USB kit is one of them.

Happy birthday LOLUG.

Exactly one year ago, me and other six people, founded LOLUG association: Me, Francesco Crippa, Matteo Castellini, Samuele Farfarini, Davide Cerri, Andrea Tasso and Martina scarabelli.

What happens during this long year? We organize and partecipate to various events:

  • Linux Day 2007
  • Two meetings on “Networking for dummies”
  • Fedora By night
  • Participation to Liberamente event
  • Fedora 9 Release Party

In one year we grew our members number from 7 to 14.

We also start a project: “Linux Information” (called PiLLO), each Thurdsay we are available to answer questions and issues about Linux and FOSS world.

Tonight we will do a party to celebrate LOLUG birthday! :-)

I have some ideas about some future events..so…stay tuned!!

Fedora 9 Release Party Report

Probably you have already read the great Francesco Crippa report’s. I want to try to write my report in a different mode, to give you another vision about yesterday day.

As Francesco said: it was great! I completely agree with him, it was a great party, with more people than other events we organized time ago. About 40 people, in our city 40 people to a Linux event are a lot.

My morning start with some tests on kobold for usb live creation station…

… and preparing GNOME foots to use it as track for people who come to event because the location was a bit hidden from the street…

After that, me and Lucia went to supermarket and bought some snacks and drinks (especially beer, of course ;-) ) and we stored it in a secure place:

This good snack is cooked by Lucia, who, with other people, bring something homemade, to party (cakes in particulars, but also short snacks):

12 hour after, we prepare ourself to come to Lodi: here you can see Daniele and Gianluca in the elevator during transport to event location:

It’s time time to return home, after cleaning location event and terminate event day shutdown ;-)

I’m satisfied of this event. A special thanks to Lucia, Francesco, Gianluca, Daniele, Raffaele, Marco and other LOLUG people who help me in event organization. I reach home at 3:10 AM and today at 8 AM I was ready to go to work. :)

Now I want to sleep :P

Fedora 9 Release Party

Party + Linux + Fedora = Beer + food + Social ;-)

I’m proud to announce first Italian Fedora 9 Release Party scheduled for 13 May 2008. We will be in Lodi (south of Milan) in Via P.Gorini 19.

We will provide food and drinks and fedora USB creation stations (powered by kobold), unfortunately we don’t have time to print CDs/DVDs, so we will bet on USB creation stations technology.

Don’t hesitate to come! Remember also to bring with yourself an USB key with at least 1Gb of free space (if you have data, kobold preserve it, but is better to backup it before ;-) )

liberaMENTE: two days after

Circa un mesetto fa, quando iniziammo ad organizzare quest’evento, ricordo di aver avuto molte perplessità, non tanto per l’evento in se, quanto per l’assenza sistematica di buona parte delle persone del LOLUG.

Ad essere sincero mi sono ricreduto.

LiberaMENTE è stata una ottima iniziativa, complessa e di notevole importante. Oggi come oggi se ripenso a quella giornata, caratterizzata da un mix esplosivo di esperienze (partecipazione del LOLUG, Evento Fedora, Meeting dei Fedora Ambassadors), sono felice di aver partecipato, di aver organizzato e di aver impiegato energie e tempo affinchè il LOLUG partecipasse.

La mia esperienza è stata caratterizzata (positivamente) dal contatto diretto con diverse persone, che finora avevo conosciuto solo per via telematica: liberaMENTE è stata anche luogo della prima riunione italiana di Ambassador fedora con la partecipazione di ben cinque elementi: Francesco Ugolini, Francesco Crippa, Andrea Modesto Rossi, Gianluca Varisco e Me.

Per quanto riguarda l’evento fedora, abbiamo allestito la prima stazione che permettesse la creazione completamente automatica di chiavette USB bootabili con Fedora 8: data una chiavetta da almeno un 1Gb ed inserita nell’apposita porta fino allo squillo di trombe. Il software è stato scritto da Matteo.

Tornando alla manifestazione, l’unica nota dolente è stato il poco afflusso di persone, ma se vogliamo esser positivi, ha permesso di confrontarsi maggiormente con gli altri espositori/partecipanti alla manifestazione.

Ah dimenticavo, al banchetto erano anche presente l’eeePC di Asus e l’OLPC. :)

Fedora by night – some day after

Parliamo un po’ del fedora by night, di martedì scorso. Potrete trovare a breve le slide dell’iniziativa, sulla pagina del LOLUG. La serata è stata molto buona, e l’affluenza discreta, considerando la diffusione dell’iniziativa è stata fatta solo ed esclusivamente per via telematica.

Ha funzionato molto bene la formula “fai una domanda e ti regalo un dvd”, si è discusso anche con il pubblico di diversi argomenti, in particolare due mi son rimasti impressi: la questione mono (Novell che sta spingendo per integrarlo in GNOME) e la differenza/contrapposizione con ubuntu (che spende un sacco di soldi per stampare CD invece di pagare gli sviluppatori per scrivere software).

Non ha funzionato, ma non è la prima volta, la formula delle offerte, che sono fondamentali per l’associazione, che non può vivere solo delle quote dei soci. Anche al Linux Day la raccolta di soldi non è andata come si sperava (pochi hanno dato tanto, e molti non hanno dato nulla), ma probablmente non è più un sistema funzionante anche quando metti in vendita magliette o gadgets.

Per il resto, c’è anche da dire che foto come queste non si erano ancora viste ;-)

Fedora by Night

Martedì 19 Febbraio l’associazione di promozione sociale LOLUG – Gruppo Utenti Linux Lodi orgranizza una serata all’insegna del software libero, dove verranno approfonditi alcuni aspetti (tecnici e sociali) di una delle maggiori distribuzioni Linux: Fedora.

Attivo il Punto Informativo Linux Lodi (PILLO)

Passato il Linux Day. Ieri il LOLUG (del quale faccio parte) ha ufficializzato l’attivazione del Punto Informativo Linux Lodi (PILLO).

“Il PILLO ha lo scopo di fornire una presenza costante a cui rivolgersi per ricevere informazioni e aiuto sull’utilizzo di Linux e del software libero, a beneficio dei cittadini.“

Penso che sia un’ottima idea: si passa infatti da essere un’entità radicata su una Mailing List e un sito, a qualcosa di concreto, presente sul territorio. Martedì scorso, il primo martedì dopo il Linux Day c’è stata una buona affluenza (5/6 persone), speriamo rimanga costante o aumenti. Vi farò sapere fra un po’ come va a finire :-)

Linux Day 2007 – Tiriamo le somme

Il linux day 2007 è il terzo Linux Day che seguo come organizzatore. Quest’anno, a differenza delle scorse edizioni, ho avuto un po’ piu tempo libero, in quanto non c’erano esami che cadevano il giorno prima (2006) o la settimana dopo (2005).

L’organizzazione è andata relativamente bene, a parte diversi intoppi dovuti a seri problemi di connessione, riscontrati da alcuni membri. A parte questo, direi che il tutto è stato fatto “da manuale”. Ci siamo trovati la sera prima (Venerdì 26) e abbiamo montato tutta l’infrastruttura hardware in meno di 3 ore: il resto è venuto da se.

Abbiamo diviso in quattro aree lo spazio a disposizione: area Talk, area cazzeggio ehm, relax (LOLUG Cafe) dove distribuivamo gratuitamente bevande e biscottini :P , area LOLUG Lab dove si poteva provare linux, Area Installfest dove prendevano piede le installazioni.

La giornata di Sabato è filata liscia, nessun problema ne ritardo durante la mattina, un po’ di piu durante il pomeriggio. Diverse distribuzioni installate senza problemi, con i relativi proprietari contenti. Le persone erano di più che lo scorso anno, alcuni volti noti ma la maggior parte nuovi. L’afflusso è stato molto buono, considerando che Lodi non è una città universitaria, con un boom di presenze verso le 16:00.

Per quanto riguarda la visibilità del gruppo abbiamo avuto la visita di un paio di giornalisti (ilgiorno (la foto non c’entra una fava con il linux day :D )e ilcittadino (non c’entra molto con il linux day, ma parla di noi :P )) e siamo stati nominati su repubblica.it, soprattutto grazie a Tarantasio (il nostro progetto di software libero per windows, del quale parlerò a breve).

Alcune cose andranno sistemate, tipo l’organizzazione degli workshop, la lan party e il finanziamento (un po’ magro quest’anno).

Globalmente sono soddisfatto.
